Blue and Yellow Artworks
Portobello Market Square, London, April 2022
For 3 weeks Gail engaged with Portobello’s local community in painting four 7 metre lengths, based on the colours Blue and Yellow, in support of the Ukraine. Under the protection of the Market Canopy, the lengths of fabric were laid out and passers-by were invited to utilise black henna in cones as a painting device. With the addition of water, the individual contributions work was not only unified, but blues and yellows appeared from the black.
With 76 participants, the pieces quickly became dynamic, and Gail’s final addition of blue and yellow emulsion, brought the compositions their final rhythm. The paintings were finally hung horizontally, high within the structure of the canopy, with only the wind as a distraction.
