'The Jungle', Calais, ‘Suitcase of Resistance’, 2016

A small suitcase containing sheets of fabric was taken to ‘The Jungle’. There, a wooden structure that shockingly remained empty due to exceeding ‘regulation’ size, was available for use. A large plastic sheet was laid on the floor and brightly coloured pigments with cones of henna were available for use.
Once the pigments were sprinkled on the white fabric, people observed the chance patterning and then drew with the henna  a composition of their own volition. A stream of refugees held at the camp kept on creating their works until it was forcibly shut down by the authorities.
